One of my Ahaa moments was reading what Saido Abdirashid said about were the racism comes from. The focus of the racism is dependent on the sender. We have touched on this during other discussions but for some reason it really sunk in when she described it. There is racism within marginalized groups, “Sometimes it’s hard to determine the reason for the discrimination. But when other Africans discriminate against me, I attribute the reason to my Somali culture. When other immigrants discriminate against me it could be because of my black race or my Muslim faith. When white people feel I am less qualified or less intellectual, it’s more due to my race and immigrant status”.

The broad Ahaa moment is the realization that marginalization has many nuances, levels and intensities. Everyone is looking for someone to blame when in reality WE ALL have a piece of this pie, all parties involved have a level of responsibility. It’s hard to listen when someone is screaming at you as it is hard to speak to those who gave up listening. All parties involved need to ensure that they are considering the view of the “other side”. Without this there will be no communication.
