I realize the weather is by chance, BUT we had an 80* sunny day in October, AND the kids were in the ocean!! Barbara brought over fresh tomatoes and herbs from her garden (we happened to be making chili) Thank you! and shared some great stories of the house. We arrived much later than we originally planned and she worked with us on that and made time in her schedule the next morning to come over and give us the run through on the house – remote controlled ceiling fans with lights – no wonder we couldn’t find the right switch! We had a 13 year old and 6 cousins between the age of 3 and 7 and their parents and grandmother – Chateau Mer worked great for us! There are (many) steps/stairs to the beach and Gram with her arthritic knees made it to the beach. There are benches placed on the landings to take a break on the way up (or just to enjoy nature) Her beach is complete with chairs and fire pit and beach toys for the kids. We roasted hot dogs and ate lunch right on the beach! There were plenty of options for sleeping and for getting away from the crowd when you needed a few minutes to yourself. We had enough room for parking – we came in 4 vehicles. Another plus is the washer and dryer – you know the kids are going to get dirty and wet playing on a beach . . . I hope if you are considering Chateau Mer you will call Barbara with any questions. She was great to work with. The location seems to be central to many sight seeing options – if you want to give up any time at Chateau Mer.

The Blaine’s were a delightful family and watching the grandkids swim on the beach in mid-October was a sweet experience for me.

We had a family wedding up the street and we rented this house in order to have a relaxing time. During the course of the week we had people come and go, different family members stay for a few nights and then head home. It was really a great house for this atmosphere.

Every year my family gets together for a family vacation. This year we chose Maine. The house was great. It was on a quiet street with amazing views of the sunrise. It had a nice private beach that you could walk along, have campfires by, and a nice “tree hut” for the kids to play in. It was nice and relaxing as we enjoyed playing games and each other’s company. There is a lot to do in the area if you don’t mind taking a drive. We went to bar harbor, Acadia, Belfast, Bangor, and to this awesome park that had water slides and other activities for kids to do. My favorite part though was that the table was big enough to fit all of us to sit down together for dinner. Definitely worth the visit.

I’m not a frequent reviewer of anything, but when I have an exceptional experience I feel it’s warranted. I had planned a week long mini-reunion for my cousins with travelers coming from all around the country to meet up in Sandy Point. The setting was perfect and Barbara’s hospitality was amazing. We used the whole house, from the basement art room to the kid’s bunks in the loft, big dinners at the long tables, long lazy evenings by the fire pit at the beach. Everyone had a great time and the coziness made it easy for everyone to get reacquainted. The location is also perfect for classic Maine day trips, among our favorites…paddling in Bar Harbor, Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory, hiking Great Pond Mountain, a visit to Reny’s in Belfast and sampling local restaurants. You can’t go wrong here.

We typically go to OBX but am SOOO glad the family chose this place. It was wonderful and had something for everyone. The temp was perfect, the landscaping was stunning with flowers, gardens, large trees and a small get away tree house on the beach overlooking a fire ring with chairs which we roasted marshmallows & told ghost stories one night. My brother was able to sail his boat right off the beach and there were nesting Osprey right down the beach in addition to seeing bald eagles and loons. The garden path across the way wound through a private archway to a secluded hammock & bench surrounded by small figures and surprises in the middle of the fairy gardens. It reminded me of CO where we’re from. We did a trip to the Acadia National park (& stopped at the L.L. Bean outlet on the way) but easily could have stayed at the house the entire time. There were all kinds of games, large areas to play and a space to do art. It was indeed magical and the host was AMAZING. I feel grateful to have made her acquaintance and would love to come back.

Ok, 5 children ages 10 to 17, 2 miniature dachshunds, for a total of 3 families and 11 people coming from Colorado, Connecticut and Ohio.. The feedback from my children and their families was “The BEST vacation ever!” This hundred year old home was a joy of clever nooks and crannies filled with unexpected designs and places to explore. My son sailed off the beach, others fished (NO license required in salt water!), day trips of just under and hour to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Great photographs and shopping. In the evening board games or cooking up sticky stuff on a fire pit on the beach. Us older folks enjoyed vegging and watching the chipmunks play around the wooden deck (no bugs when we where there too). Dr. Bridges was a wonderful warm person and a resource for children pursuing art and design careers. They loved her studio AND the “bug” lobster catered meal with homemade blueberry pie. I know the younger children will never forget the “Bugs” 🙂

We have learned that staying in a home for a vacation is a little more work then a hotel but is a lot more friendly. This home allowed a great place to eat at one long dining table, a great room with a fire place, luckily we did not need it in June, a deck for competitive dart games or a place just to sit and read, and a beach that kept the young one occupied with filing the ocean with rocks as well as a fire pit for loads of night time fun. We were there for a wedding right down the road and there was plenty of space and mirrors for everyone to get ready and out the door on time. No small feat for a family of 16. Having the linen supplied and the beds made made it so much easier to get settled in. Finding all the nooks and crannies and beds was a good way to explore the house. There were toys for the little ones and books for all. The kitchen was great. Lots of dishes and glasses for all of us. It was well stocked with gadgets. At an hour from Acadia and bar harbor, 30 min from Bangor the family split up and went in different directions, always meeting back for dinner. several trips to young’s lobster for lunch were made. Stairs to the beach were difficult but I just had a total knee and was able to make it down and up. Hopefully we will be able to visit in the future.

My family recently vacationed at Chateau Mer. With 11 people, aged 1 to 80, there were many requirements that needed to be fulfilled when finding accommodations for our trip. Pet friendly, centrally located, private beach, proximity to nature, roomy, and so on. Chateau Mer more than met our expectations! It was our “home base” for trips to local towns, Acadia and Bangor, and was a great place to come home to at the end of a busy day. Lots of down time was spent exploring the beach and enjoying the peacefulness of the cottage with its stunning views. Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with a fire in the fireplace. Barbara thinks of everything! Every person in our party found “their spot” in the house. It was cozy and we all enjoyed each other’s company, but also had enough space to feel like we gained adequate rest and relaxation apart. You really could never get enough of the scenery. You could enjoy the area while walking the dogs on the quiet street that the house was parked on. You could also enjoy strolls on the rocky sand. We all have so many pictures of sunrises and sunsets from the balcony and beach of Chateau Mer. I can honestly say you couldn’t absorb in enough of the views that this vacation cottage has to offer. I think it is safe to say that we all wish we had more time to spend in Maine and at Chateau Mer. Barbara enabled such a great trip and transition to a new place by sending a packet with our rental. It helped TREMEDOUSLY. We utilized it for suggestions of restaurants and attractions, but most of all, flea markets! It was so much fun and we all left with something special. We all also left with fantastic memories. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fantastic introduction into Maine that also makes you feel right at home!

Our kids and grandkids are still posting and raving about the wonderful vacation that we all had at the “cottage”. With three families and and eleven people to share a living space for a week it turned out great. There were plenty of places for each part of the family to find their own niche for privacy and yet plenty of room to enjoy the coziness of the fireplace and for plenty of games. The location is very centrally located to accommodate visits to Acadia national park as well as sailing on a schooner. This was a family reunion too so other family members were able to visit us and enjoy our place. The beach located below the cottage provided some of the best rocks for skipping across the water that my kids and grandkids said they had ever seen. Most of us love lobster, some grandkids not sure yet. Shute’s just up the road a couple of miles. Barbara introduced us to them by providing us with a gift certificate. They were especially helpful in our shipping home some lobster to family that did not get to join us on this trip. There was a wonderful time had at a wonderful place. We hope to be able to return here with other family members that did not get to attend this trip. Barbara was there to help us when ever we had a question or need.

We had a large group from all over the US coming into Maine for a business meeting and we are so glad that we chose to stay at Chateau Mer! The location was awesome and the view from the deck out over the water was just perfect throughout the stay. When you rent any house, your experience begins from the moment you make contact with the owner/agent. In this case, our experience with Barbara and her network of helpers and local contacts was first class. I would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a quiet, unique, true Maine experience. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your property!

I highly recommend Chateau Mer, and owner and gracious hostess Barbara Bridges, to anyone seeking a genuinely Maine experience and a great family or group time together. We had 18 in our party, 10 kids under the age of 11. So, the craft room, attic playroom, fairy house forest and beach were greatly enjoyed! We had fires by the beach at night and enjoyed the meteor showers. We brought our own kayaks, which was a huge plus as the kids got to see the seals and loons up close. The currents were powerful so we stayed close to the shore. It is ocean, even though the water often looks like a lake! The owner was very helpful and even took time Sunday morning to help our kids find a spot and materials for their fairy houses. Don’t bother bringing any lobster pots or gear, she has the whole set up down to a science! The stairs down to the beach are significant so be sure to check them out if you have anyone in your party with special physical needs. This house is an amazing space for creative types! There is no TV/DVD player (Small tv with a VCR in the attic) which was ideal for us as we were hoping to help our kids unplug and connect with the cousins they only get to see a few times a year. We were inspired to create, enjoy and share. The kids (and grown ups) enjoyed board games, drawing, swimming, making up stories, walking the trails of Sandy Point and actually getting to know each other. The location was also ideal for day trips. It took us about an hour to get to Acadia and we enjoyed a day of hiking and sandy beach (for those in our party who wanted more waves.) This location was ideal for exploring Acadia and also the Belfast/Camden area!

My Response

I DO have a DVD/VCR player in the sleeping loft but it is true- this is a place for playing games, walking on the beach, building fairy houses and swimming on a hot summer day.

We stayed at Chateau Mer at the beginning of August. We had 8 adults and 6 children 11-14. The house is fantastic and charming. We loved the eating space – which fit all of us with room to spare. The kids are old enough to explore the area on their own, which was a treat for us. The beach is adorable and private, the only drawback is the stairs, but that didn’t deter many of us from enjoying it (except for one on crutches!) We enjoyed trips to Belfast, Bucksport and Acadia during our stay. Thank you Barbara for the space, the kindness and the memories! We all send you many thanks – for your hospitality! We hope to be back!

We spent a wonderful week at Barbara’s and I can’t say enough great things. We had 6 kids under 10, 2 teenagers, and 6 adults and never once felt we needed space. The house is very open with lots of places to relax and get away, but also plenty of room for everyone to be together at once. We had many nights of dance offs and card games in the great room. Being able to eat as a family at one table was such a treat as well. The kitchen is really stocked with everything you need, I mean everything. We all enjoyed the beach, it was so nice to walk outside and go do there whenever we wanted, we had campfires every night. During the day we would swim and walk for miles down the beach collecting crabs. The approx 70 stairs to go to and from the beach were the perfect workout as well!! The yard was wonderful, the kids loved playing it in, the porch was great for sipping morning coffee and watching the seals and harbor porpoise! It was a wonderful get away! Thank you so much for opening your home to us and being such a wonderful host!

My Response

Wonderful family. I enjoyed watching them use every inch of the property! NOTE: There are not 70 STAIR steps to the beach!

Barbara’s enormous “cottage” was a perfect location for our family vacation last summer. We had 3 families with 3+ kids each, plus grandma, and it was just the right size and floor plan for our group. The rooms were separated enough for privacy and quiet time alone for those who wanted it, and the living and dining area had plenty of seating and space for group activities. It’s perched on the cliff side, which gives great views and easy access to the shore via wooden stairs and a path down the hill. Plenty of trees give good shade during the day. It was chilly in the evenings and the mornings, but the fireplace was well-stocked with fuel, so we also had a great time around the fire, and even made a fire on the beach one morning to watch the sun rise. I even found a copy of George Lucas’ novel version of the original “Star Wars” in the library, which Barbara was gracious enough to let me keep. This was a great location and experience for our family.

My family and I – 7 adults and 10 children ages 2 to 12 just spent a week at Chateau Mer on Sandy Point, ME and had a wonderful time. There was plenty of room for all of us to eat together and spend time visiting in the living area or on the deck. The loft was great for the older grandchildren to sleep and there were enough toys and books for all of the children to enjoy. The kitchen was very well stocked in terms of dishes, pots and pans, coffee pot, toaster and everything we needed. We all enjoyed the fireplace in the family room on the days when it was cool or overcast. The walkway/steps down to the shoreline was a bit difficult for Grandma but not for the grand kids. They all had a great time playing in the sand and the water and the play house on the beach. We all loved the openness of the house and deck and the spacious bedrooms. We especially enjoyed being able to see the shoreline and watch the tide come in and go out. The art work around the house was so interesting and we took advantage of the art room on the lower level to make tie dyed shirts for everyone. We all had such a great time together, we would love to stay at Chateau Mer again.

Our LARGE family (my husband and I, our nine children, five kids-in-law, and our nine grandkids including two infants, five toddlers, a 4yo and a 6yo) loved our week here. There was lots of room and lots to do. Even with two rainy days the large living area had space for some little kids to run around and infants to be fussy (occasionally all at once!) and absorbed the sound even with the vaulted foyer/stairs area. Plenty of quiet space on the second and third floors to nap kids. We had a fire in the fireplace one cool evening, and did a couple evening fires on the beach. Our 19yo son camped down there in a tent. It helps to have flip flops or water shoes on the gravelly beach. All ages had fun at the beach playing horseshoes and other outdoor games, little ones digging in the sand with their plastic pails and shovels while the men armed with serious shovels Barbara provided constructed several large sand forts in attempts to withstand the tide. We left behind the final one just at the water line which is surrounded by a moat at high tide. (I heard it was the talk of the neighborhood…perhaps Barbara will include her photo of it on her website 🙂 We had lots of fun with the kayak and paddle board we brought, paddling out to see the seals sunning on the shoal out front. The real-outdoors-person can venture further, accounting for tides and river current and wind. The same son mentioned above tried to circumvent the long island across the way but was thwarted by strong current and whirlpools at the head of the island and had to return the way he came…was a LONG paddle. I loved the warm sunny beach and also in contrast the large deck shaded with dappled sunlight in the stand of huge hemlocks. The deck accommodated all of us for lunches and at other times was a quiet place to sip coffee or a glass of wine. We left behind the see-through black mesh that we attached to its railing for some added toddler safety for others who would like to use it. Barbara was easy to work with, helpful with info and supplies, and relaxed about us filling up and enjoying her property. I would love to return when it works again for our family!

It provided the perfect setting for members from ages 2 to mid-70’s. The kids, ages 2-14 had so much fun. Our cooks loved the well-equipped kitchen. GREAT property! Rented in late May and the weather was gorgeous. I woke up to amazing views every morning overlooking the ocean. Campfires right on the beach. Nicely secluded but not far from amenities if needed. There are some neighbors nearby but are very friendly and respectful. I was able to rent the property off season which I highly recommend. No crowds on the beach and peaceful, not to mention that Acadia national park is within an hour drive and avoiding the crowds there was key. Barbara was very pleasant to deal with and flexible when staying only for the weekend. She does stay in the detached garage next door sometimes (depends on time of season) but respects your space if you are looking for more privacy. It was not a concern and did not impact the stay at all. She is very responsive and is easily reached by email or phone. The house exceeded my expectations in layout and comfort. There were plenty of beds and space for 12 grown men. There were plenty of cooking supplies including a GIANT 6 burner grill and lobster pot. The art if very interesting and adds a unique ambiance to the stay. I keep thinking I shouldn’t write this review and keep this gem hidden for myself but that wouldn’t be fair 😉 Will definitely be renting again. Highly recommended! THANKS BARBARA!!!

We had no way to anticipate what a wonderful experience our family would have at Chateau Mer. Our family of ten adults and eleven children, four-months to eighteen, gathered here for a family reunion, our first in eight years. The accommodations were both adequately private and roomy enough for all to be together. There was never a shortage of hot water. Sufficient parking allowed our four vehicles to come and go without having to move a vehicle when someone was heading out. While the kitchen could be a bit crowded with separate cooks and meal plans, we quickly adapted. The huge table allowed us all to sit together, as we chose. The BBQ was a dream. With beds upstairs, children could be put to bed, allowing for the adults to spend evening time visiting. The wireless network allowed at least seven of us simultaneous access at any time. The beach below was fun for all, with sand, shells, a gentle slope into the water, and free access all along the shore. We spotted seals sunning themselves on a small island in the channel whenever the tide was lower, and the nearby osprey, cormorants, loons, and gulls provided aerial shows. A few songbird species were also present. Outings included nearby Fort Knox, the observatory atop Penobscot Narrows Bridge, Acadia National Park, the lighthouse near Searsport, Maritime Museum at Searsport, The Nut House (fudge!), and convenience foods in Belfast, Searsport, and Bucksport. We had a great time, and enjoyed crafting a house for the fairy garden, as well. Thanks Dr. Bridges, and Sara, for being available when we had questions. Thanks, too, for tracking down the toy our grandson left behind! Great people, great place, great vacation!

We chose Chateau Mer for our family reunion not just because it seemed to have enough space for us (17, altogether) to gather together, but also enough spaces to spread out. Both turned out to be true, and the house and, overall, our experience exceeded our expectations. The location of the house is even more beautiful and convenient than the pictures and descriptions convey. The view of the sea from the large deck and the balcony above is gorgeous, regardless of the time of day or the weather. Getting to the beach is easy (though going back up might be taxing for those for whom stairs are a difficulty), and the beach was always empty, even with the public beach right around the corner. The kids enjoyed the sand and the water all day, and we all had a lovely time under a super-moon around a bonfire at night. We took day trips to Belfast, Searsport (the Penobscot Museum was a hit with young and old alike), Acadia National Park and Fort Knox–all within an easy drive. The house was plenty large for our group. We had adult couples in the postmodern bedroom and two the grotto; two teens in the den; a couple with two teens in the Mexican suite (the statue where the kids were was a little scary at first); a couple with a young child in the toy room; and a couple with two small children in the loft. The long table and the great room provided plenty of space for everyone, even on rainy days, and the rooms were separate enough to allow anyone who wanted some space to get away. The whole house is decorated with interesting art, and it is thoughtfully designed to accommodate groups like ours. Working with Barbara was great. She was very clear in her communications with us, and provided everything we needed. Her assistants helped us get settled in, and checked on us several times during the week. She was herself staying nearby, and also stopped by to make sure everything was going well. The only thing which might have been improved was the check-out time which, at 9:00 a.m., is earlier than many places we’ve stayed. We felt a bit rushed, and it is unfortunate that that should be among our last impressions of the visit. I would suggest hiring a few more people to clean in between visitors so that guests not feel panicked about getting out on Friday morning. Overall, though, everyone had a splendid time, and we will definitely consider coming back the next time our reunion is in Maine. Many wonderful memories!

My Response

The Koonce’s really enjoyed EVERY aspect of the cottage and surrounding area. I DID talk to my cleaning folks and we may add another cleaner on the crew to allow for a 10:00 am check out.

Recipe for Memories: Take 11 women who went to high school together in North Dakota, each celebrating her 70th birthday in 2013. Add one pint sour cream and a package of Lipton dry onion soup mix. Mix with dancing the Charleston in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace and an order of steamed, cracked whole lobsters – 11 of them, of course. Stir with completing the 1,000-piece puzzle left by previous guests … and start another one. Add some spice with side trips to little villages and other points of interest in all directions – Belfast, Camden, Searsport, Bucksport, Acadia National Park, and the fall festival in Ellsworth with a chowder competition and tasting – and sail Penobscot Bay to view dolphins and seals, and lobstermen bringing in their catch (more spices are available in the kitchen!). Serve it all with the charm and whimsy of Chateau Mer’s retreat. Yes, there are lots of beds, and we had no problem with just two and a half bathrooms. The hot water tank easily handled showers for all of us, which was a pleasant surprise. Why would anyone want a television? With so many other things to do and see, we certainly didn’t have time to even THINK about the world around us. Just wonderful friends, reconnecting from Florida, Kansas, Oregon, Washington, Rhode Island, Minnesota and North Dakota. Loved the ease of the Portland, Maine airport; also easy by car, as four of us from Minnesota and North Dakota drove to/from Chateau Mer through the glorious Canadian countryside.

‘Twas a magical week at the Chateau mer. My french fiancée and I reserved Chateau mer with hopes to have a small, intimate wedding with our immediate family and closest friends. We ended up having to cancel the wedding due to my fiancée’s Visa issues, but we decided to keep our reservation and turn the experience into a celebration of our forthcoming marriage and an occasion for our two families to meet in-person for the first time. My family is mid-Atlantic American and my fiancée’s family is mid-Atlantic French. Separated by ocean, language, and culture, there was much apprehension upon the two parties meeting for the first time. Within the nurturing grounds of Chateau mer, anxieties melted away into a festival of love. Our mothers became sisters of the kitchen, serving endless delights for the party of 24 to enjoy. On the day of the event there was space for all. Family members and friends mingled on the deck, chatting over the BBQ, others at the edge holding steady binoculars to catch seals across the bay at low-tide, some sitting on the picnic table enjoying their sparkling cider. Staring over the deck, looking 100 feet down towards the beach, we could see our friends running towards the cool water and the less brave skipping stones on the side. Inside, the elder members sat around the fireplace in the living room, enjoying the savory smells of the kitchen and the small-talk with younger relatives and new friends. The long, wooden dining table, fit for 20-plus, hosted a few still snacking after a heavy communal supper. Our spirits filled the house and grounds of the Chateau, but our souls were equally affected by the environment. The finished wood on the dining table matching the stairs, the large piece of art across the steps in harmony with the light fixture, the breadth of space in the main room inviting openness and beckoning the stretching of limbs and hearts, but not so vast to overbear and belittle, the outside gardens pruned and intentionally placed and the scatter sculptures and displays of art accentuating each space, the long, windy, staircase down to the water – a trail embedded in the mystic woods – these touches and more cannot but exert there effect on the inner being. Chateau mer did justice and more to an event that deserved and needed warmth and care. I hope others can be the recipients of its magic.

Chateau Mer was base camp for my family this June. It was wonderful! The view from the deck is amazing and the beach so much fun for little ones and grown ups a like. Easy driving distance to Acadia and most sought out day trips. The home is stocked with everything you will need – including the kitchen which we found easy to use. The beautiful table fit all of us with space to spare… really fantastic to all sit and enjoy our meals together. Lupine and other wildflowers were in full bloom in the front yard, we loved them! Thank you, Barbara and Sara! Your help and understanding is greatly appreciated. We really enjoyed staying at your home!

We spent a week with family and friends at Chateau Mer at the beginning of August and found it to be a perfect place. The house is well laid out for a large group, and the deck and long table in the great room made wonderful spots for entertaining. There is a large wooden platform (could be a stage, but we didn’t have time to put on a show…) down at the shore that held everything needed for a sumptuous feast, and we had several big dinners down there. I was surprised at the quality of kitchen ware (although I wish I had taken sharp knives) and the copious amount of plates and glasses (very little plastic!). Sara was very helpful in telling us about the area and offering her assistance if we needed anything. The price of lobsters was very low (poor lobstermen!) and we ate our fill, a rare luxury for us since leaving Maine 40 years ago. Acadia, only an hour away, provided us with wonderful day hikes and bike rides as well as a day at the beach with big surf. Barbara’s adirondack chairs on the hill across the street were a favorite coffee spot-for-two in the morning where we could enjoy the beauty of Maine in quiet serenity. It was hard to leave!

My wife and I stayed in this house from October 14, 2009 thru October 21, 2009. It would be difficult to improve upon the location of this property if you are looking for a very comfortable & private home, equidistance between Camden and Bar Harbor. The amenities abound…excellent working fireplace, private beach, great kitchen, large deck with a spectacular view, etc… The owner (Barbara) was easy to work with and the local care taker (Sarah) was very pleasant and helpful. What a great way to experience Maine. Thank you Barbara and Sarah!

Our family had a wonderful time at Chateau Mer in early June. My Brother and 2 sisters and parts of their families were able to all stay together in Chateau Mer, which made this trip very special. The trip was arranged to bring our mothers remains home to Maine. Our parents were originally from Maine and spent many of their last years in the Searsport area which they loved. All of us have spent many summers visiting and enjoying Maine and all it has to offer. Chateau Mer gave us an extremely comfortable and enjoyable home base. It spacious area, front deck with a beautiful view of Penobscot Bay ensured this trip was truly special. We were able to gather for a family meal consisting of 15 people comfortably at the expansive dining table. We also were able to enjoy fires in the living room while playing “Catch Phrase” and reminiscing. Our day trips included, visiting the Observation Tower at the new Bucksport Bridge, which was breathtaking. We enjoyed Lobsters at Youngs Lobster Pound in Belfast, both within 15 minutes of Chateau Mer. We also went to Bar Harbor and Camden which were within 45 minutes to and hour in either direction. We were all extremely happy with the accomodations and the caretakers were not only helpful, but very friendly and intesting. Given the opportunity to return, we would certainly make sure to stay at Chateau Mer again and again.

We just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know how wonderful our week was at Chateau Mer. Even the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of our family as we enjoyed your beautiful home. My family has vacationed in Maine for over forty years, we owned a summer home on Islesboro for many, many years. In all my experience of renting, yours was the home that received rave reviews from everyone in the family, not an easy accomplishment in a group whose ages range from 52 to 2! We are spread out along the eastern seaboard for fifty-one weeks a year, we count on our week in Maine to catch up and reconnect, your home provided the perfect backdrop for our reunion. The memories we created last week will live a lifetime for all of us, the highlight was perhaps the bonfire on the beach with smores, something we’ve never done before. Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise.

We are fortunate enough to live in Sandy Point, the most beautiful spot in the world, year ’round. However, we have only one guest room, and this year (”07) we had Christmas week guests from Austin, TX, East Hampton, NY, Charlottesville, VA, Portland and Western Maine–a dozen too many for our little cape. We put our guests up at Chateau Mer, and they were all blown away by the beauty of the snowy woods and the sparkling water, the deer in the meadow across the way, the wild tutkeys foraging in the snow. Truly a picture-postcard winter wonderland, but warm and cozy inside Chateau Mer, in front of a roaring fire. And it’s even better in the summer! Highly recommended.

I intend to give Chateau Mer an honest review. And to be honest, it is an absolutely wonderful light-filled house and setting. It has been modernized with every convenience; plenty of kitchen supplies, great laundry, etc. Huge picture windows open up the glorious view and sunrises. Yet the feel of an old Maine cottage is maintained. The owner wants nothing more than to make your stay a great one. Ours was a first time adult family reunion complete with grandchildren. That table is worth the rental alone. It sat our entire family + guests. . So often one rents a large capacity house and there is nowhere to enjoy a family dinner together, which should be the civil end of your exciting day. And your day will be exciting even if you don’t visit the many great nearby venues. (Don’t miss Acadia on a clear day – start early). Down a long stairway though the hemlocks, you come upon a long sandy beach and a spot for fires and s’mores at night and kayaking (do bring) on the gentle ocean of this inlet. The beach has a wonderfully private feel. The huge deck above is perfect for deck activities, and has a beautiful new gas grill. Also a perfect spot for the grandparents to enjoy the family below. Rainy days were no problem. A wonderful fireplace, lots of wood, tons of games, lots of places to sit all over the house. There’s a room for any mood, as it were. Need a crowd? Huge living room. Need to be alone? Lots of quiet places. The cousins loved their own sleeping “attic” which is so filled with things to play with, we were amazed. Even a costume box for putting on plays! So many owners put things away. Barbara fills her lovely, creative, fun and funky home with things to see and enjoy. (Even be amazed at!) If you’re thinking of renting Chateau Mer, be honest with yourselves; if you are not willing to respect, enjoy and maintain what’s here, go to a cheap motel. We want it to be just as special when we return. ! We had such a memorable time. Thank you, Barbara P.S. Would be a terrific spot for a group of adults, too.

I stayed at Chateau Mer with a wedding party. Since it will accommodate so many, I have to say that it represents an excellent value, especially with larger groups. Because of the nature of our visit, it was very convenient to have everyone together in one place. I only wish that we’d had more time there. My husband and I stayed in the downstairs bedroom with the “tiled grotto” bathroom. It was beautifully done. The decorative touches throughout the house are terrific, and the kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, and so forth. It really does have all the conveniences of home, and is very clean. Everything was in excellent repair. The surrounding area is breathtaking. I filled up an entire memory card with pictures of the bay and the beach. My husband enjoyed fishing from the rocks on the beach, and many of us took advantage of the fire pit to roast marshmallows and enjoy the night air. There are neighbors nearby, but they are very nice and quiet. The area is very rural, and there are many wonderful sights to see in the area, so I would recommend having a car. I would definitely suggest this property to friends, and hope to someday return for a regular vacation, so that I can take it slow and really enjoy the atmosphere of the house.Recommended for: ELDERLY ,  ADVENTURE ,  GIRLFRIENDS ,  TOURISTS ,  FAMILIES_TEENS ,  FAMILIES_YOUNG_CHILDREN

I held my wedding here in July of 2004, and we tested out the “Sleeps 24″ claim. I would say that if you want a quiet vacation you might want to bring a few fewer people, but we had a lot of fun all being in the same place. There were, indeed, more than 20 of us. The beach is beautiful and several people decided to camp down there. We held our ceremony at the Sandy Point Congregational Church. A local caterer took care of our food and cake, and we held the reception right in the front yard of the house. It was a very satisfying experience.Recommended for: ADVENTURE ,  GIRLFRIENDS ,  FAMILIES_TEENS ,  FAMILIES_YOUNG_CHILDREN ,  ROMANTIC

What an absolutely perfect family retreat! Even though it rained most of the time we were there (mid May), we still had a GREAT time. The house was roomy enough that even with 10 people, we didn’t get on each others nerves. There are several cozy places inside for some quiet time. The pictures don’t tell the whole story of what an awesome place this is. The home is very warm and inviting, plus has lots of interesting art and objects to view. Chateau Mer inspired me to dabble with some beach art, using snail and mussel shells. The only thing that wasn’t as we thought it would be, was the privacy. Prior to our arrival, we did not realize that there were neighbors nearby. Turned out that it really didn’t matter, as the neighbors were friendly, but not nosy. Our gang was a little noisy at times, but no one complained. I’d recommend to anyone staying here, to be sure to go visit nearby historic FT Knox. Quite an interesting experience. We really enjoyed our forays onto the beach everyday….new discoveries wash up every day! I definitely recommend Chateau Mer to anyone looking for a rental in Maine.
