Learner Objectives
The students will discover how powerful icons have been, and are, in our lives by identifying advertising icons which have influenced their product choices, selecting a product and designing an icon with a supporting  advertising campaign to sell that product.

Make sure to complete ALL components of the Student Idea Book to be eligible for review

From 1-14            2 points each

Does my icon include:

  1. A new idea?
  2. Make the viewer think a new thought about the product?
  3. Include a new slogan or song?
  4. A nutritious component?
  5. A “hook” to attract the buyer?
  6. Especially creative final model?
  7. Especially good craftsmanship on the final model?

 COLLECT THE DATA

1. Look at the pictures of Ode To Gluten. Why do you think the artist made this sculpture? Make sure to scroll down to the gallery and double click on the pictures.
2. Do you recognize any of the icons on the sculpture? Name them. Here
3. What is an ICON?   Make a class list.

Is there another definition for the word icon which does not appear? Do you think the dictionaries need to catch up with the 21st century?  Define  Iconic.  Are any of the following advertising icons –  iconic? You decide.

5. What is YOUR favorite advertising icon?  Make a class list and talk about why the icons are effective. Each student should write a minimum of three sentences explaining why their icon is the best and most effective. Share their reasons with a partner.

RESEARCH

6. Select a product. Research the product. How is the product made?  What is the product made FROM? Is that important? Is the product healthy? Is it fun? Will it make you stronger, faster, prettier, thinner, or smarter?
Brainstorm icon ideas. Nothing is too crazy. Write at least 3 ideas in your IDEA BOOK. Could it be an animal? A monster? An historical figure? An old icon morphed/evolved?  A fantasy character you create? Share your ideas with a partner and get at least two ideas for YOUR product icon from THEM. Write the two new partner ideas in your IDEA BOOK.

CREATE

7. Design your Icon.  Use colors and/or pictures. 
8. Write a paragraph explaining why your icon will become iconic.
9. Write a paragraph explaining how you will use your icon to market your product.
10. Create your icon
10. Assessment 

THREE FINALISTS WILL BE CHOSEN TO DEVELOP THEIR ICON IN 3-D OR FINISHED DIGITAL FORMAT. GRANT FUNDING IS BEING SOUGHT.
