Cooperative Learning Individual Assessment

Cooperative Learning Positives

  • Practice several of Howard Gardner’s areas of intelligence including emotional intelligence. Learn to be Smart with Heart. This learning strategy helps the Smarties work on the Hearty.
  • The students who are organized and have study skills will model these skills for their student team.
  • The students who are skilled at reporting out skills.. music, writing, visual etc. have the opportunity to shine and contribute.
  • More minds = more variety in approach, sources, ideas etc. as long as the teacher rewards risky thinking.

Group Work Negatives:

  • Social pressure and negative interpersonal dynamics regarding distribution of work load resulting in some students learning little or nothing while others do the work and become  resentful.
  • Ongoing negative social consequences because of  low functioning group dynamics.
  • Time management challenges for the teacher regarding Individual Assessment.
  • No individual accountability for  group members.

Cooperative Learning and Individual Assessment. CLIA , designed by Dr. Bridges,  provides the accountability currently missing in the assessment of group work.  This assessment tool provides the opportunity for the  teacher to simply drop their class list into the software and students to be held accountable as they learn the real life skills necessary to work successfully in a group. The students will come to consensus, enjoy anonymous team member assessment on five different benchmarks and emerge without the group members experiencing ongoing social stress.
